Pet Burial: Everything you need to know

Sep 06, 2021

Losing a beloved pet can be an extremely upsetting time, and for many can be just as heart wrenching as losing a person. As they become an integral member of the family unit, letting go can be very difficult. Not only this, but for children, losing a pet can be an important lesson in coping with future grief, meaning the pet’s departure needs to be marked with the significance it deserves.

The rules of pet burial can seem confusing and can depend on a number of factors. Nevertheless, the laws in the UK around pet burial can be quite straightforward. To avoid any additional stress, here at
Sunset Memorials, we’ve put together everything you need to know about creating a place of remembrance for your beloved pet.

What does the UK law say about burying your pet?

Under legislation, you can bury your pet within the grounds of your home, subject to these conditions:

  • You must own the land where the pet is buried.
  • The pet is not buried near any water sources.
  • There must be two feet of earth above the pet in heavy soils, and three in lighter soils.
  • The pet’s remains must not be hazardous to human health.

It is illegal to bury your pet anywhere but the home they lived in, or at a registered pet cemetery.

Where can I find a pet cemetery?

You can lay your pet to rest at a registered pet cemetery. You can find your nearest by visiting: The Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria.

You can choose to scatter ashes or opt for a burial, where you can choose a memorial to honour and remember their life.

How quickly do I need to bury my pet?

If you’re not planning on burying your pet immediately, you need to keep the remains stored below 4 degrees in temperature. If it’s a larger animal, burial as soon as possible is recommended as rigor mortis can set in making the remains difficult to move.

If you’ve got other pets in your household it’s a good idea to let them see the remains for a short period. This will allow them to understand what’s happened, and reduce the chances of distress.

How much does it cost to bury a pet?

While it costs nothing to bury your pet at home, if you want to bury your pet at a dedicated cemetery then the price will depend on the size and chosen site.

Should you wish to get your pet cremated, then you can choose whether to scatter or keep the ashes in a memorable place.

Whichever you choose, you can accompany it with a
headstone to create the most sentimental memorial grave
